  • As the need for masks rises during the pandemic, volunteers work to keep Alaska covered

    A group of three women Alaskan women banded together on Facebook to rally sewers across the state to sew masks for Alaska's front-line workers during COVID-19. Their Facebook group includes tutorials, outreach, and customer service. They have about 300 volunteers from places all over the state and have filled the requests of 56 different organizations (about 37,668). At least 14 communities across Alaska have benefitted from this. Another response is underway in Anchorage where scientists are experimenting with 3D printing N95 masks.

Various states have used different methods to enable the spread of such services, with no one-size-fits-all approach. Federal data show the number of emergency texts grew from about 1,000 in 2014 to more than 188,000 in 2018. While data are incomplete, a majority of the U.S. evidently remains outside areas with 911 call centers that can receive text messages.

    A dispenser dubbed "the rice ATM" is providing sustenance for people who are suffering under the effects of the pandemic. From 8 AM to 5 PM every day, citizens stand 6.5 ft apart from each other to receive 3kg of rice a day from the ATM. On the first day they gave 2.3 tons of rice to over 700 people, and they are continuing to service people until the rice runs out. Residents are very happy about the program, with one woman saying that her 3 kg of rice per day can feed her for 4 days.
