DRASA Health Trust trains community members to be health champions, teaching them skills to prevent and control the spread of infectious diseases. Between March and April 2024, the group trained 2,089 people. As a result of their education initiatives, DRASA Health Trust saw a 43.2% increase in residents’ understanding of infectious diseases, as well as the implementation of prevention strategies and better hygiene protocols for both businesses and individuals.

Dream Defenders takes hotline calls and calls from law enforcement asking for outreach workers to intervene on crisis calls. Teams consist of mental health and medical specialists, as well as an experienced crisis counselor trained in de-escalation tactics, aiming to respond to crisis calls with more care and empathy.

The Climate Resilience for Frontline Clinics Toolkit was developed to help healthcare providers prepare for and respond to climate-related emergencies. The toolkit offers guidance on patient communication, disaster preparedness and environmental health risks. The toolkit was created in collaboration with Americares and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, with co-development from free clinics and community health centers serving low-income and uninsured patients.

Six programs throughout the state, including the SUN Project and Project CARA, are working to provide support to pregnant mothers navigating a substance use disorder. With support from the North Carolina Perinatal Substance Use Disorder Network, the programs share best practices for treating perinatal substance use and expand access to treatment. Project CARA alone serves more than 200 patients each year.

The city government of St. Paul, Minn. partnered with Undue Medical Debt, a nonprofit organization that buys up and forgives personal medical debt. Leveraging pandemic relief funds, the city was able to forgive more than $100 million in medical debt through the partnership.

Health engagement hubs like Washington state’s Buprenorphine Pathways connect people with prescriptions for methadone and buprenorphine to help treat addiction. In addition to medication and a syringe-exchange program, the hub also connects patients to social services, taking a more holistic approach to addiction treatment.

Médecins Sans Frontiers (MSF) launched a nutrition project in collaboration with the Katsina State Ministry of Health to provide healthcare and support to children suffering from malnutrition. Currently, the organization has four centers throughout the state. Year over year, the centers are seeing an increase in the number of patients, having cared for about 20,000 patients from January 2024 to October 2024 alone.

In displacement camps where medical care is scarce, community midwives are working against the odds to provide safe OB-GYN care and deliveries. An individual midwife can see anywhere from 18 to 50 women a month who struggle to access basic maternal health services.

The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline provides free, 24/7 support for those experiencing a crisis, emotional distress, alcohol or drug concerns, and general mental health struggles. The line can be reached via call or text, instantly connecting the person with a crisis counselor. Since its launch in May 2022, 988 has received 10.8 million calls, texts, and chats, with call volume increasing by 74% in New Mexico alone from 2022 to 2024.

The Attack Against Asthma initiative uses crowdfunding initiatives to purchase inhalers that are then distributed to university students with asthma. Since launching in 2023, the campaign has distributed over 700 inhalers in the country’s southwest region and has even extended support to people who aren’t students if they can provide proof of need.

Enibo Albert Charity Foundation's multi-faceted approach to humanitarian services aims to empower vulnerable populations in Bayelsa by addressing their immediate needs, promoting education, and fostering community development, all while advocating for a healthier environment.

Aflorar Herb Collective provides herbs to community members in the wake of Hurricane Helene and intense recovery efforts to address high levels of stress, anxiety, insomnia and other mental health struggles. The group uses locally grown herbs and traditional practices to make teas, salves, soaks and other remedies to calm the parasympathetic nervous system and provide a moment of much-needed self-care and rest to those impacted by the storm.

In 2020, Medicare temporarily expanded its coverage to include telehealth appointments for all specialties, allowing patients to receive care without the added health risk of travel. About one in four telehealth appointments are made by Medicare recipients, and diagnostic accuracy fell between 77 percent and 96 percent during one period studied in 2020.

The Adewunmi Desalu Parkinson’s Foundation (ADPF) offers personalized care plans and a low-impact gym for people living with Parkinson’s disease. Research shows low-impact exercises and the Rock Steady Boxing practice help improve balance and mobility, helping slow the disease’s progression. ADPF data shows that 90% of participants who adhere to their care plan and practice the exercises see a slower progression of Parkinson’s.

She Deserves Uganda provides menstrual hygiene education to young girls and an organic aromatherapy solution to pain from period cramps they call The Cramp Relief Droppers, as a safer and more affordable alternative to traditional over-the-counter painkillers. The group has provided menstrual health education to over 10,000 girls across 50 schools and has distributed over 1,540 units of The Cramp Relief Droppers.

The Bonnicare Foundation garners support and funding for people in need of education, healthcare and economic empowerment through visual storytelling on social media. This approach helps humanize the challenges people are facing, encouraging those with the means to donate. With the funding they’ve received through social media donations, the Bonnicare Foundation has helped pay the school fees for more than 1,000 primary and secondary school students in rural areas.

The Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF) provided by the federal government is increasing healthcare access for vulnerable populations by renovating dilapidated hospitals and improving access to reliable medical services and resources like medications and potable water.

Blind removal programs involve the redaction of race and class identifiers from a child welfare casefiles. Although once believed to be a scalable solution, in L.A. and beyond, a look a new data shows they aren't viable long term.

The Elizabeth Glaser Paediatric AIDS Foundation, in partnership with the state government, is working to get adolescents living with HIV to adhere to antiretroviral therapy by providing free treatment and incentivizing regular medication use by fostering a sense of community among the youth. The group currently operates in 16 African countries and has successfully suppressed the viral load of over 80 youths.

Research shows kangaroo mother care, which is the long-standing traditional midwifery practice of giving newborn babies skin-to-skin time with caregivers after birth, provides substantial protection against infections, as well as stress relief and a chance for emotional bonding. Following several studies, the WHO recommends all babies receive immediate kangaroo care without spending time in an incubator, as researchers estimate kangaroo care could save about 150,000 lives each year.

The youth-led Foundation for Younger Generation gives young people a platform to talk about their mental health with peers and licensed therapists. The group hosts events in-person and online through platforms like WhatsApp and has since reached about 400 people.

Los Angeles County’s Homeless Outreach & Mobile Engagement (HOME) program uses street psychiatry to get psychiatric medication to people experiencing homelessness in an effort to get them a step closer to housing. The HOME team has 223 full-time staff members and served 1,919 people last year, 22% of whom ended the year housed.

Technology like chatbots, motion detectors and hotlines are helping prevent overdose deaths, which typically happen when people use alone. The Never Use Alone hotline which was started in 2019 by volunteers with experience using drugs or who have lost someone to an overdose. Since starting, they have received more than 45,000 calls and have called emergency responders about 200 times.
