  • How Indigenous-led organizations are rebuilding connection to language and culture

    The Nisaika Kum’tuks and Tsawalk learning centers provide alternative schooling options for Indigenous students to learn more about their culture and languages. The centers teach a total of 100 students from 23 different nations, many of whom come from single-family homes that are experiencing economic hardship or have been part of the foster care system. While the schools have recently shut down to be consolidated with the local school system, efforts are underway to create a new learning center that continues the mission of combining traditional knowledge and culture with academia.

  • In the wake of hate, the law is not always enough

    Hate crime laws apply to a narrow range of conduct, and often fail as a response to bias incidents that constitute hate speech but are not in themselves a crime. When high school students working on a history class project produced a video with a song treating the KKK and racist murders as a joke, the school and community responded not with prosecutions but with community dialogues to air differences of opinion about the incident. Students of color then formed a group, Project D.R.E.A.M., that expanded the conversations to the entire school, educating a mainly white community about the impact of racism.

  • ‘Race against the clock': the school fighting to save the Ojibwe language before its elders pass away

    Waadookodaading is an Ojibwe immersion school that meets state and federal academic standards but does so entirely in the indigenous language by connecting children to their cultural heritage. The school goes through 8th grade and uses the forest as its classrooms where traditional ceremonies and practices are used to teach lessons. For example, students learn math while harvesting maple sap and wild rice and biology through practicing sustainable fishing and hunting. Community elders play an important role in passing on their knowledge to students and the 100 graduates provide hope for the language’s future

  • Indigenous-focused podcast connects students, teachers, community leaders

    Word Up is an Indigenous-focused podcast that connects students, teachers, and community leaders for an opportunity to learn and explore social issues. The podcast began as a way to diversify how indigenous literature was taught but expanded to incorporate other topics. For each episode, teachers select a student to interview public figures. The student learns to conduct background research and design interview questions, allowing them to feel reflected in the topics. To date, the podcast’s five episodes have had 266 unique listeners and 384 downloads, and several more episodes are being planned.

  • Lifeline: How Bilingual Learning Pods Are Helping English Language Learners Navigate Classes During the Pandemic Without Teachers or Peers

    English language learners in Cleveland, Ohio are getting the help they need to get through school through bilingual learning pods. Esperanza Inc., a local non-profit, opened up centers for Spanish-speaking students catch up on their remote learning lessons, but the crucial part was staffing the center with bilingual staff. The centers currently have a waitlist and serve anywhere from 40-50 students.

  • This former residential school is now a centre for reconciliation

    Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie has repurposed a former residential school building into the Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre where students can learn about their Indigenous history and heritage. In the past, indigenous people were sent to these schools and stripped of their language, cultures, and traditions. Now, educators at SRSC are teaching newer generations of indigenous students rediscover their culture.

  • Integration Starts in the Village

    Ethnic Azeri students face disproportionate barriers in achieving university education compared to Georgians. One of those reasons is due to language barriers. Isolated from Georgian society, it's not uncommon for Azeri communities to not speak Georgian fluently. The center has now expanded into a network of multiple centers. One center serves as many as 160 children. It’s working. Some of the centers had a 100% success rate in helping Azeri students enter college.

    Learning pods are helping students in Cleveland access a safe and supportive space to complete their virtual school lessons during the coronavirus pandemic. Although space is limited at the centers and they can't replace the social benefits of in-person schooling, the students who have attended are able to catch up on the assignments they had difficulty completing at home.

  • A Traveling, Pop-Up Library Holds Exclusively Books Written by Black Women

    A pop-up library is highlighting books written by Black women and has over 3,000 books in circulation with books from every genre. Founder Ola Ronke Akinmowo also travels to other states with several hundred books and does presentations on Black writers. The initiative has inspired similar projects in Detroit, Atlanta, Houston, and Los Angeles.
