Beyond Violence uses curriculum co-designed by women currently incarcerated and uses peer co-facilitation to address the aggression and violence women have experienced personally, as well as been perpetrators of. The curriculum, which also highlights the impact of individuals’ communities, relationships, and social structures, improves mental health and facilitates long-term healing.

    The Trauma Intervention Program (TIP) is deployed by first responders after a traumatic incident, like sudden death. Citizen volunteers are trained in “emotional first aid” and available to provide support 24/7. TIP has 14 affiliates nationwide, one of which responded to 213 calls between June 2019 and February 2020 with 100% reliability.

  • More youths are becoming home caregivers. Experts say they need more help and support

    Programs like the American Association of Caregiving Youth (AACY) advocate for and provide support to youth caregivers who are responsible for caring for sick, elderly, or adults with disabilities at home. AACY’s Youth Caregiver Project provides support in school and at home by offering customized services based on each student’s needs, including tutoring, counseling and even connections to food resources or school supplies. AACY serves about 600 students in 30 schools each year. Since the Youth Caregiver Project began in the late 1990s, about 2,000 youth have completed the program.

    The group Moms Bonded By Grief went beyond the support-group work it has done for years for survivors of gun violence homicide victims to take 50 children and their mothers and grandmothers to a Poconos Mountains water park and resort. The long-weekend respite from Philadelphia's relentless gun violence included group therapy for children and adults, enabling them to talk about topics that often get buried or ignored. The excursion, funded by donations, is planned to be repeated next summer.

  • For girls with mothers in prison, a summer camp offers much-needed support

    For three days each summer, the Girls Embracing Mothers (GEM) camp near Dallas gives girls an escape from their daily reality of being denied a normal relationship with their incarcerated mothers. Founded by a lawyer whose own mother was incarcerated, GEM combines typical summer-camp fun with trust-building exercises. During camp and afterward, the girls become part of a community of peers who understand each other's trauma – which puts them at higher risk of dropping out of school, mental health problems, and homelessness – in a place where they need not feel shame for their mothers' status.

  • 'I am not alone:' How a California county is helping Hispanic family caregivers find peace

    La Buena Vida connects caregivers from Latino households with respite care, training, and support groups. Using federal funding, the program serves as the Ventura County Area Agency on Aging’s resource center for Spanish-speaking family caregivers. The program also provides safety equipment, like ramps and railings. In addition to much needed emotional and physical breaks from their responsibilities, the group connects caregivers to Spanish-speaking professionals who offer counseling and support. The program staff regularly checks in with its 66 clients to see how they are doing and assess their needs.
